In Lombok, you can surf all year round using a consistent swell and many different breaks to choose from, there’s always a wave working. By having said that, the rainy season is our favorite season to browse. That is when most of the surf areas are still working, less crowded places, and perfect glassy waves in surf spots like Seger and Are Guling.
Does this mean that the dry period isn’t a fantastic time to go to? Nope, the dry season has a great deal to offer; this will be when waves like Mawi and Dessert Point function best. These spots are lucky with offshore winds and a more massive swell at the rainy season, delivering some substantial hollow barrels. If you’re not searching for barrels, then you can browse the protected areas in Ekas, then Gerupuk, and TanjungAan on the less windy days.
- Are Guling
Are Guling is a large bay with both a right and a left-hand wave and works best between October through April because that is the rain season. These two are reef breaks, with the left-leaning to be a little more shallow and sharp. The waves are breaking in the center of the bay. It is possible to find a boat to fall on you personally or even paddle out. Before you snore, make sure you realize the currents.
Are Guling Right – This is a perfect hand wave that can hold both big and small swell and operates best in low to mid-tide. It can be a long playful ride with a nice wall or a fast barreling wave.
Are Guling Left – A left-hand wave that breaks over the bay’s left side and is more fast and hollow having a quieter ride. Are Guling left is typically significantly less crowded than the right.
2. Seger Reef
Seger beach is a must-visit; not only does it deliver some fun and short waves, but it also gives one of the best sunset places near Kuta. It’s close to Kuta using a short paddle out. This break works best from the rain and mid to high tide as it stays on a shallow restricted reef with plenty of sea urchins. Seger works well on small to midsize days as it can not hold a significant swell.
Seger Right is a short fun wave using a quick takeoff. The wave is known to be shifty, and you can expect some strong currents when the swell is large, and the wave is high.
Segar Left works best on a mid-tide and is much more mellow than the right, making it a better choice for beginners – intermediate. Seger left will be a favorite surf spot by several regional groms.
3. Mawi
A magnificent shore located 30 minutes west out of Kuta, Mawi is one of the most famous waves in south Lombok and will be the best and most consistent surf crack during the rainy season. Mawi is an A-frame reef break that can provide you with an enjoyable right-hander on a small to midsize swell with quicker barreling sections on a lower tide. The left-hander can hold most of the springs but works best on a 6-8 ft swell and offshore winds, so delivering some clean open barrels. Mawi is working year-round but is greatest in the rainy season with east offshore winds and more consistent swell. On a smaller day and higher wave, this tide could be a pleasure wave for beginners. But on mid to large swells, it’s more appropriate for the seasoned surfers because of its strong waves and strong currents.
