As the COVID-19 vaccinations proceed, traveling becomes less risky. Though health protocols are still in place, the rules have been relaxed for the fully vaccinated. Some places now allow going mask-free, as long as social distancing is observed.
While the rising cases make herd immunity seem impossible, that’s not actually the case, at least in some countries. And those countries encourage fully vaccinated travelers to visit. Many domestic destinations are accommodating, too. If you’ve been craving an all-inclusive Alaska fishing trip, you can book your stay now. Alaska offers free COVID-19 testing for travelers upon their arrival. But if you tested negative, don’t drop your guard because unexpected surges could occur.
Likewise, stay cautious when you visit COVID-19-free countries. Even if you’re fully vaccinated, that doesn’t mean you can’t catch the virus anymore. Keep in mind that it just reduces your risk for severe COVID-19.
That said, if you’re ready to go packing, these are the best places to include on your bucket list:
- Greenland
The largest island in the world only had 49 cumulative COVID-19 cases. On June 5, 2021, the government announced that they’ve laid out new rules to allow fully vaccinated travelers to visit their country. The rules were in effect as of August 10. Persons younger than 17 years old and Greenland residents are exempt, but only until August 24.
- Sint Eustatius, Netherlands
This tiny Dutch island in the Caribbean only had 20 COVID-19 cases overall. Despite its low COVID-19 level, the CDC recommends that only fully vaccinated people should visit it. Travelers should follow the local regulations, such as wearing face masks and observing social distancing.
- Saba, Netherlands
On another Dutch island in the Caribbean, the total COVID-19 cases on Saba were a measly seven. But because of their minimal health resources, the government imposed strict rules for travelers. They must show proof that they’re fully vaccinated. The rules are subject to change anytime, so stay updated if you plan to visit Saba.
- The Caribbean
If you want to go on a cruise, the Caribbean will welcome you. The Royal Caribbean will set sail starting from the Bahamas and Saint Maarten. Crystal Cruises has already sailed last June from the Bahamas. In August, they will start their Norwegian cruise, departing from Jamaica and the Dominican Republic,
- Greece
Cruises to Greece had also begun. Celebrity Cruises, Seaborn, and Ponant are currently sailing around the Greek Isles.
- Multiple European Cruise Destinations
The routes of MSC Cruises include Italy, Malta, Spain, France, Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece. But they only cater to passengers living within the European Schengen Zone. If you’re from the States or anywhere else, you might be bound to certain restrictions.
Safe Types of Travel
Being fully vaccinated doesn’t automatically permit you to do all types of travel. Cruising is allowed because it’s mostly open air. But staying in hostels or traveling with a group of other tourists might be discouraged. It’s still important to limit your close contact with people from within your household.
Nature trips are far safer than indoor destinations. But every traveler might be having a nature trip. To stay safe, practice social distancing, and try not to remove your mask. Avoid group activities, too, unless it’s with people from your household. You can make considerations for other people who are also fully vaccinated because you all have minimal risks. However, if you’re going to be in contact with an unvaccinated person after your travel, avoid group activities.
Camping is a good type of nature trip to try today. Experts agree that it’s safe and good for your mind and body. But of course, you should follow CDC’s guidelines. That means the usual; social distancing and wearing your mask.
It’s also better to camp at a local campground than anywhere far. The fewer the areas you travel to, the less exposed you will be. Similarly, if you’re going to travel abroad, try to go one country at a time. You might be itching to trot the globe like you used to, but it’s not the time for that just yet.
Also, avoid peak seasons or busy times when you’re choosing travel dates. And don’t travel with an unvaccinated or partially vaccinated buddy. Some countries allow them entry but will certainly require them to undergo a 14-day quarantine at most. That’d be inconvenient for you both, so just travel with someone fully vaccinated.
And when you return home, avoid close contact with unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people for 14 days. Yes, quarantine yourself because you can still carry the virus. Get used to it now, because this new normal might stay for a long time. Traveling will not be the same for a few more years.
